Free help for families in Badin

Badin's Farmers, Fishers and Students: PHWO Can Listen

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. · Message PHWO · info@phwo.org

Badin sits at the very bottom of Sindh, where sugarcane fields give way to salt flats, lakes and the sea. It has lived through cyclones, the floods of 2011 and 2022, and years when the canal water ran out before it reached the tail end. Through all of it, families here have stayed resilient. Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) offers a free hand as a voluntary NGO in Badin, open to all faiths and castes and tied to no political party.

Badin has no PHWO office, camp or staff. We have a single office: our registered one in Larkana. From Badin, Matli, Talhar, Tando Bago or Golarchi, you can apply on the website, message PHWO from your free PHWO account, or reach us through a volunteer who lives near you.

Badin in figures

According to the 2023 Census, Badin District is home to 1,947,081 people over 6,858 square kilometres. Nearly four out of five of them live in villages; just 22 percent are urban. Since 2017, when the count stood at 1,804,958, the population has grown by about 1.3 percent a year. The provincial census report puts Badin among six districts where literacy is only 30 to 40 percent, and among eight where more than six in ten children between 5 and 16 are not in school.

Most people speak Sindhi. Hindu communities such as the Meghwar and Kolhi are a significant part of the rural population, and many work as farm labour.

The census also shows a sex ratio of about 108 males to every 100 females in Badin and an average household of 4.8 people, one of the smallest in Sindh.

Tail-end water and a heavy flood year

Farmers at the tail of the canals often receive too little water, while the drainage that carries salty water to the sea has overflowed in heavy rain. In 2022, PDMA Sindh counted 68 affected union councils in Badin and 799 kilometres of damaged road, one of the highest road-damage figures in the province. Cane and rice were lost and livestock died, and many families took loans they are still repaying.

This is why so many of the requests we receive from districts like Badin are for ration and for help with debt. Both are needs you can bring to PHWO.

Your request, from start to finish

Start at Request help. Pick the need that fits: ration, a debt, medicine, school fees, rent, disaster losses, or a laptop or a phone for school or for earning. You then add a live photo of the person asking, and explain the need in Sindhi or Urdu.

A volunteer from your area may phone or visit to confirm what you have said. PHWO’s team then weighs the need. If it is verified and PHWO is able to meet it, help is arranged. We never promise a sum, a lawyer or a deadline, and asking for help never costs you anything.

Young people who want to study or work online

In a district with few factories and few offices, a young person with a laptop and some skills can find work in data entry, design, tutoring or customer support without leaving home. Requests for a device for study or work are among the most frequent PHWO receives, and Badin students and graduates are welcome to apply. Tell us your class or qualification and what you plan to do with the device. Our programmes include digital skills and vocational training as part of eight focus areas.

Cyclones and the coast

Badin’s coastline, from Zero Point to the creeks near Shah Bandar, is low and exposed. Cyclones and storm surges have washed over it in the past, and sea water has crept into farmland, leaving white salt crusts where crops once grew. Many coastal families now fish in the lakes and creeks or work on other people’s land. When a warning is issued, follow instructions from PDMA Sindh and the district administration, and move early. After the storm, if your boat, nets, house or stored grain are lost, you can describe the loss in a request to PHWO.

Free legal aid in Badin

Women in Badin ask us most about khula, maintenance and child custody, and those suits go before the family judges sitting in Badin town. Some also face land or inheritance disputes after a husband’s death.

Use the free legal aid page to explain your problem. A police report is not needed. Where a child’s custody is at stake, or the next date before the Badin judge is only days away, our volunteer advocates look at that file ahead of others. PHWO cannot promise that a lawyer will take the case or what the court will decide. You can also ask the district court about the District Legal Empowerment Committee, which helps poor litigants hire counsel.

From Badin, you can help too

Teachers, social workers and especially lawyers in Badin are welcome to volunteer. Checking a neighbour’s request, helping an older woman fill in her form, or collecting donations in your mohalla all count. PHWO gives its volunteers a certificate and, alongside it, letters of appreciation and experience.

Landowners, traders and families with relatives abroad can donate or sponsor a case for one household. Zakat and Sadaqah routed through PHWO go to the needy without any cut. For an exact amount, open the Zakat calculator.

Our Rishta Desk also serves Badin free of charge. It welcomes every faith, checks each profile with a live selfie and a PHWO staff review, and does not promise any match.
