Support Beside the Indus: PHWO for Sukkur Families

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Sukkur grew up around the river. The barrage, the old bridges and the boats of the Mohana community are part of daily life, and so are the floods and heat that come with the Indus. Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) is based in nearby Larkana and acts as a voluntary, non-sectarian NGO in Sukkur for anyone who writes to it, free of charge.

We do not run an office in Sukkur. PHWO’s only office is its registered address in Lahori Muhalla, Larkana. If you live in Sukkur, New Sukkur, Rohri or Pano Aqil, you can reach us through the website, by messaging PHWO from a free PHWO account, or through a local volunteer.

How to ask PHWO for help from Sukkur

  1. Open Request help and choose what you need: ration, medicine, school or college fees, rent, a debt, a laptop or smartphone needed for studies or a job, or losses from a disaster.
  2. Add a live photo of yourself, and explain your situation in Sindhi, Urdu or Seraiki.
  3. A volunteer may call to confirm details or visit if one lives near you.
  4. Your case is then assessed. If the need checks out and PHWO has a way to meet it, support is then organised. PHWO never promises money or a timeline.

You will never be asked for a fee. Anyone demanding money in PHWO’s name is not acting for us.

Facts about Sukkur District

Sukkur District had 1,639,897 people in the 2023 Census, living on 5,165 square kilometres. Almost half, 49.7 percent, are urban, a higher share than any other district of Sukkur or Larkana divisions. Households are large, averaging 6.1 people, and the district has one of the widest gaps between men and women in the province, with a sex ratio of 113 men for every 100 women. Literacy sits in the 50 to 60 percent band.

Sindhi is the main language, with Urdu used widely in the city and Seraiki and Punjabi heard among traders and transport workers.

Family cases and free legal aid in Sukkur

Sukkur has a district court complex and a circuit bench of the Sindh High Court, so many cases from Ghotki, Khairpur and Shikarpur also end up here. The requests PHWO receives are mostly about khula, maintenance and custody.

If you cannot afford an advocate, write to us through free legal aid. You can ask even if no FIR was ever registered. Custody disputes and hearings that are close in time are reviewed before others. We look for a volunteer advocate who practises in Sukkur, but we cannot promise one will be available, and we never promise how a judge will decide.

River, heat and the 2022 floods

The Indus brings life to Sukkur but also risk. In 2022, PDMA Sindh reported 49 union councils in Sukkur District affected by rain and floods, with 181 kilometres of road damaged. Summer heat in upper Sindh is among the harshest in the country, and labourers who work outdoors at the grain markets and brick kilns lose wages whenever they fall sick. Families who are still recovering from 2022 or from a heat-related illness can include that in their request.

In mid-September 2022, PDMA Sindh recorded 41 relief camps in Sukkur District holding 12,990 people. Families in low-lying areas near the river and the canals were among the worst hit. If that loss left your household in debt, it can be part of a request, which is checked and assessed without any promise of help.

Beyond the city: Rohri, Saleh Pat and Pano Aqil

Sukkur District is more than the city on the right bank. Across the river, Rohri is a railway junction whose porters, vendors and small workshop owners depend on passing trade. Further out, Saleh Pat and the villages near Pano Aqil rely on wheat, cotton and date farming, and many men travel to Karachi for seasonal work while their families stay behind. When those remittances stop, ration and school fees become the first worries.

If you live in one of these tehsils, you do not need to travel to the city to reach PHWO. A phone is enough, and a neighbour or teacher can help you fill in the form. Tell us the name of your village and union council so a volunteer can find you.

Sukkur volunteers make the work possible

Sukkur is one of the towns our volunteers come from. Students at Sukkur IBA University and other colleges, teachers, doctors and especially lawyers can help. Register on the volunteer page and choose what suits you: checking cases near your home, helping older people with forms, or gathering donations. PHWO thanks every volunteer with a certificate, and with letters that record both appreciation and experience.

Giving, Zakat and sponsorship

Traders in Sukkur’s markets have a long habit of giving. You can donate cash or goods, or sponsor a case of a student or patient. PHWO passes on Zakat and Sadaqah in full to people in need. Before the new Islamic year, the Zakat calculator totals your cash, gold and shop stock to show the Zakat due.

Sukkur families hunting for a proposal can use the Rishta Desk free, whatever their faith. It checks each profile with a live selfie and a PHWO staff review, and it is the two families who decide.
