Free help for families in Australia

Sydney, Melbourne, Perth to Pakistan: A Practical Giving Guide for Australian Donors

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Pakistani Australians are spread from Western Sydney to Melbourne’s northern suburbs, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, and many keep close ties with towns and villages back home. If you want to donate to Pakistan from Australia and reach people in need beyond your own family, this guide explains how Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) accepts gifts from overseas.

PHWO is a Pakistani welfare organisation that depends on volunteers, with its one office in Larkana, Sindh. It has no Australian branch, board, representative or registered entity. Applicants in Pakistan pay nothing, ever.

Donating from the other side of the world

Distance makes it hard to know whether money reaches the right hands. PHWO’s approach is to ask every applicant for a live photo, and to have volunteers look into each case before anything is arranged. If the account is genuine and PHWO can do something useful, it acts. No applicant is told in advance that they will receive support.

Typical requests are for ration, clearing debts, laptops for students, hospital bills, school or university fees, rent, and recovery after floods or fires. They come from every province, not only Sindh.

What a gift from Australia supports

PHWO keeps zakat in a separate fund, uses it only for eligible recipients, and spends none of it on running costs. Sadaqah goes into its own fund and is passed to needy people in full. Read about its fields of work, such as education, health, skills for women and young people, and emergency relief, on Programmes. You can also back one checked household through Sponsor a case, which suits donors who like to follow a single family’s progress.

How to send your donation from an Australian bank

PHWO does not offer card payments or PayPal. Its Donate page lists:

  • International wire transfer (sometimes called an international money transfer or telegraphic transfer) from your Australian bank.
  • A bank transfer made inside Pakistan into PHWO’s UBL account, when a relative there can pay for you.
  • Goods delivered to the Larkana office.

PHWO receives rupees only. Your Australian dollars change into rupees at a rate your bank chooses, and fees for overseas transfers vary widely, so check both the rate and the charges first. Copy the recipient details from the donate page itself. Then fill in the confirmation form on that page. A numbered emailed receipt follows once PHWO spots the credit in its statement.

Australia is ahead of Pakistan: Sydney and Melbourne by five hours (six during daylight saving), Perth by three. A message sent from your PHWO account in your afternoon reaches Larkana in the morning or around midday.

Zakat and Ramadan in Australia

In recent years Ramadan has fallen in the Australian autumn and summer, and many families set their zakat date then. Any fixed date in your lunar year is fine. Total your cash, superannuation you can access, gold, silver and business stock using the Zakat calculator, and ask a scholar if you are unsure what counts. Remember international transfers may take a few business days, so fitrana should go early enough to reach families before Eid prayer.

Checking a charity in Australia and overseas

Australian charities are registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, and its public register is the place to check them. PHWO is not on that register, since it is a Pakistani organisation; back home, its welfare-agency registration file is still open with the authorities. A gift to PHWO is therefore generally not tax-deductible in Australia. If this matters to you, speak with your tax agent.

Wherever you give, slow down if someone rushes you, asks you to pay a personal account, or cannot show a real address. Real PHWO account details live on phwo.org and nowhere else.

Fundraising in Australian communities

PHWO looks for fundraisers abroad who can spread the word honestly. You might mention it at a community night, in a university society or at an iftar with friends, then share the official donate link so every person pays directly. Please never collect cash yourself. Court and family-law work stays with Pakistani advocates; an Australian solicitor or barrister is still very welcome to raise support. Sign up on Volunteer; every volunteer receives a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.

A family member in Pakistan can pay locally

International transfer fees can take a noticeable bite out of small gifts. If you already send money to a parent or sibling in Pakistan, you could ask them to pass on your donation by bank transfer to PHWO’s UBL account and tell PHWO it is from you. That way the receipt shows your name, and you avoid a second overseas fee. Just keep a note of the date and amount for your own zakat record.

Another option some donors choose is to save up smaller monthly amounts in a separate Australian account and send one larger transfer each Ramadan. One transfer means one fee, and the larger sum can be split in your confirmation between zakat and sadaqah. Whichever way you give, PHWO’s volunteers treat a gift of a few thousand rupees with the same care as a large one.
