Search results for Pakistani charities in Canada mix local registered bodies with organisations based in Pakistan itself. Should you wish to donate to Pakistan from Canada directly to a group working on the ground, this page describes how Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) receives gifts and what happens to them.
PHWO is a Pakistani welfare organisation run largely by volunteers, with its sole office in Larkana, Sindh. It has no Canadian branch, board or collector, and it is not a registered Canadian charity. What it offers the families it serves, from ration to legal advice, is free.
Why some Canadian donors choose PHWO
Many Canadians of Pakistani origin already support parents and siblings. The appeal of PHWO is different: it lets you help strangers whose needs have been looked at carefully. A request arrives with a live photo of the applicant. Volunteers study it, may call the family, and arrange support where the need can be confirmed and met. There is never a promise of help, and nobody receiving it pays a single rupee.
Requests come from all four provinces as well as Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, not just Sindh.
What a Canadian gift can cover
The Programmes page sets out eight fields of work, from schooling and healthcare to skills for women, relief after disasters and care for the environment. In real terms that can mean a month’s groceries for a widow, a college student’s semester fee, a laptop for an online course, a hospital bill, or rebuilding after a house fire.
Zakat is ring-fenced. It is paid only to people eligible for it and is never used for any running expense. Sadaqah sits in a separate pot and goes wholly to those in need. If you want one family to be the focus of your giving, Sponsor a case lets you choose a checked request.
Sending money from Canada, step by step
PHWO does not process Visa, Mastercard, Interac or PayPal payments. Its Donate page offers:
- International wire transfer from any Canadian bank or credit union that sends wires abroad.
- A local bank transfer to PHWO’s UBL account if someone in Pakistan pays on your behalf.
- In-kind gifts dropped at the Larkana office.
All money arrives in rupees. Your Canadian dollars are converted by the sending bank, and fees differ a lot between banks, so compare the rate and charges before you send. Take the beneficiary details only from the donate page, then submit the confirmation form. A numbered receipt comes by email once the transfer shows up in the bank records.
On time zones: Pakistan is nine hours ahead of Toronto in summer and ten in winter, and twelve or thirteen hours ahead of Vancouver. Messages sent from your PHWO account late in your evening land during Pakistani working hours.
Ramadan, fitrana and your zakat date
Zakat becomes due after one lunar year on wealth at or above nisab. Canadian families often use Ramadan as their fixed date; if yours falls elsewhere in the year, that is fine too. Work out the sum with the Zakat calculator, then convert to rupees. Leave a margin for bank processing and for statutory holidays when sending fitrana, which should reach recipients before Eid prayer. Label your transfer as zakat or sadaqah in the confirmation so it lands in the right fund.
Volunteering and fundraising in Canada
Fundraisers outside Pakistan are welcome. Talk about PHWO in your community centre, youth circle family group and send people to its official donate page. Please do not hold anyone’s money yourself or run collections under PHWO’s name. Legal aid is only given by advocates in Pakistan, so Canadian lawyers who wish to help can do so as fundraisers. Join through Volunteer. Every volunteer is given a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.
Checking a charity before you give
The Canada Revenue Agency keeps a public list of registered charities, which is the right place to check any Canadian charity. PHWO is not on it, because it is a Pakistani organisation; its application for registration at home, under a 1961 social welfare law, is still being processed. So a gift to PHWO will not generate a Canadian tax receipt, and it is generally not deductible. Speak with your own accountant if in doubt.
With any appeal, be careful of emotional pressure, unverifiable photos and requests to pay a private e-transfer address. PHWO accepts gifts only through the accounts shown on its own website.
Remittance apps versus a donation wire
Autocomplete in Canada is full of searches about the cheapest app to send money to Pakistan. Those services are built for sending to people, often as cash pickup or wallet credit. Some of them can also deliver into a Pakistani bank account, and if yours can, the account details on the donate page are the ones to use. Whichever way you send, keep the transaction reference, because PHWO matches every confirmation against its own statements before it issues a receipt.
If a family member is travelling to Pakistan, they can also pay locally once they land, which avoids international fees altogether. Just ask them to tell PHWO the gift is from you so the receipt carries your name.
One more practical point: exchange rates shift daily. A gift of a fixed amount in Canadian dollars may arrive as a slightly different rupee figure from week to week. That is normal and does not mean anything has been deducted by PHWO.

Frequently asked questions
Will I receive a CRA tax receipt?
No. PHWO is not a registered Canadian charity. It emails a numbered PHWO receipt, but that is not an official Canadian donation receipt.
Can I use Interac e-Transfer?
No. Use an international wire from your Canadian bank, or ask family in Pakistan to pay locally.
Are there PHWO volunteers in Canada?
Some supporters abroad act as fundraisers, but PHWO has no office, representative or collection team in Canada.
Can I send clothes or goods from Canada?
Goods are accepted at the Larkana office. Shipping from Canada is usually costly, so many donors prefer to send money instead.
