The Dutch Pakistani community is modest in size but closely knit, with families in The Hague, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, plus a growing number of students and tech professionals. Before you donate to Pakistan from Netherlands bank accounts, you will want to know exactly where your money is going. This page covers how Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) accepts and uses gifts from abroad.
PHWO has no stichting, vereniging, office or contact person in the Netherlands. It runs from one office in Larkana, Sindh, and families in Pakistan who come to it are never charged.
Giving to individual households, not overheads
Dutch donors are used to asking hard questions about overheads, and that is healthy. PHWO keeps costs low by working online and through volunteers rather than running branches. Requests arrive from every province: a family in Nowshera whose house flooded, a disabled man in Bahawalpur unable to buy medicine, a student in Quetta who needs a laptop for university. Each applicant supplies a live photo, and volunteers go through each request. Support is arranged when the need is established and a response is practical. There are no guarantees.
Zakat and sadaqah funds
Zakat is kept in its own fund, reserved for Shariah-eligible recipients; salaries and bills are never paid from it. Sadaqah is recorded in a separate fund and goes fully to people in need. To see PHWO’s areas of work, visit Programmes. For donors who like to follow one family’s story, Sponsor a case lists requests that have been checked.
The donate page also links to PHWO’s donation policy and a page describing where money goes, which are worth reading if you like to understand an organisation before giving. Dutch donors often want to see how decisions are made, and those pages explain the principles PHWO follows, from keeping zakat separate to checking requests before money moves.
Sending money from a Dutch bank
iDEAL, Tikkie, cards and PayPal are not options, and a regular SEPA overboeking will not reach Pakistan. Instead, the Donate page offers:
- International wire transfer: a buitenlandse overboeking outside SEPA, sent by SWIFT from your Dutch bank app or website to PHWO’s account.
- A relative paying in Pakistan by bank transfer into PHWO’s UBL account.
- Goods brought to the Larkana office.
Your euros become rupees at a rate set by your bank, which may add a fee for non-SEPA payments. Check both figures, and choose the option where you pay the charges if you want the full sum to arrive. Copy PHWO’s beneficiary details only from phwo.org. Then let PHWO know through the form on the donate page. It matches your payment to its statement and emails a numbered receipt.
Pakistan is three hours ahead of the Netherlands in summer and four in winter. A message sent from your PHWO account at 9 in Amsterdam is read around noon or 1 pm in Larkana.
ANBI, tax and PHWO
In the Netherlands, gifts are usually only deductible if the recipient holds ANBI status from the Belastingdienst. PHWO does not have ANBI status and is not a Dutch organisation, so gifts to it are generally not deductible. See the Belastingdienst for official rules, or ask a tax adviser. Some Dutch charities also carry a quality mark from the CBF; PHWO does not. Back in Sindh, the paperwork to register it as a welfare agency is still moving through the system.
When to pay zakat from the Netherlands
Many families calculate zakat during Ramadan, but you may use any date that marks your lunar year. The Zakat calculator adds up savings, gold, silver, investments and business stock; convert everything into one currency first. Payments outside SEPA are slower than domestic ones, so dispatch fitrana early enough for it to reach families before Eid prayer.
Fundraisers in the Netherlands
Overseas fundraisers are a real need for PHWO. Student associations, community groups and friendship circles are good places to explain its work. Please send people to the donate page to give for themselves, rather than setting up a Tikkie or collecting cash on PHWO’s behalf. Only advocates practising in Pakistan handle its legal aid. Join through Volunteer; volunteers receive a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.
Donate to Pakistan from Netherlands without risk
Dutch consumer advice and common sense agree: never pay under pressure, be careful with requests to pay private accounts, and check that an organisation has a real address. PHWO’s is House 704/C, Lahori Muhalla, Larkana. Genuine account numbers appear on phwo.org alone, and PHWO never asks donors to transfer to an individual. If someone in the Netherlands claims to collect for PHWO, they are not authorised; please tell info@phwo.org .
A practical tip: save PHWO’s details in your banking app as a named payee only after copying them from the website yourself. That way, if a fake message later arrives with different numbers, the mismatch will be easy to spot. And if a friend forwards an appeal that mentions PHWO, check the account against the one on phwo.org before paying anything.
Free help for your family in Pakistan
Relatives facing hardship at home can apply through Request help. Those with family disputes can ask for Free legal aid without an FIR, with custody matters and urgent hearings read first. The Rishta Desk supports families of every faith who are searching for a match, free of cost, with a live selfie check and a PHWO staff review of each profile, and decisions left to the families; it does not promise a match.
