NGO in Bahawalnagar: Support from the Sutlej Bank to the Edge of Cholistan

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Bahawalnagar stretches from the Sutlej and the Indian border in the north down to the sands of Cholistan in the south. Its five tehsils (Bahawalnagar, Chishtian, Fort Abbas, Haroonabad and Minchinabad) grow cotton, wheat, rice and citrus on canal water, while the desert fringe survives on livestock. In August 2025 the Sutlej flooded more villages here than in any other district on that river, and since then many families have been looking for an NGO in Bahawalnagar.

PHWO (Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization) is a volunteer body that responds to families in every province and charges none of them. In Bahawalnagar district PHWO has no office, relief camp or local worker of any kind. The only office is in Larkana, Sindh; people here contact it online, through Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or by email to info@phwo.org .

Bahawalnagar district facts

The 2023 Census recorded 3,550,342 people in Bahawalnagar District, up from 2,975,656 in 2017, a growth rate of about 3% a year. Around 27% live in towns. Bahawalnagar tehsil and Chishtian are the most populous. Punjabi is the mother tongue of about 94% of residents.

Chishtian is known for the shrine of Khawaja Noor Muhammad Maharvi and its grain market; Haroonabad and Fort Abbas are cotton and market towns; Minchinabad lies close to the river and the border.

The flood of August 2025

According to Dawn, 104 villages in Bahawalnagar district were submerged by the Sutlej by 29 August 2025, the highest count for any district on that river (Dawn). Aaj News reported that two major embankments near Chishtian, Dolah Akoka and Bhini Machhian Wala, collapsed (Aaj News). Standing cotton and rice were swept away and many families lost livestock and homes.

If the flood hit your family, describe the loss in your request and attach photos. Separately, the district administration and PDMA Punjab keep their own flood-loss registers; ask at the DC office whether your household has been counted.

Life on the desert edge

South of Fort Abbas and Haroonabad, the canal colonies give way to Cholistan. Families here depend on goats, sheep and camels, and water for people and animals is a constant worry in the hot months. Health centres are far apart, and a sick child may need a long journey to reach a hospital. When animals die in a drought or heatwave, a family can lose most of what it owns.

Financial help in Bahawalnagar

Flood-hit and struggling families from all five tehsils can use Request help. Cotton families at Minchinabad, herders near Fort Abbas and labourers in Chishtian have all described needs such as rations, a doctor’s bill, a son’s fees, a rebuilt roof or a loan from the arhti. Add a live photo of yourself, and explain your need in your own words.

Volunteers confirm what you wrote before anything else happens. Only then is the need weighed; where it is genuine and PHWO is able to meet it, something is arranged. Nobody can tell you the result in advance, and the form itself is free.

Free legal aid in Bahawalnagar

Criminal and civil trials for the district are held in Bahawalnagar city and at the five tehsil headquarters; the Bahawalpur Bench of the Lahore High Court is the next stop on appeal. Floods that wiped out field boundaries, inheritance, tenancy and family matters are behind many local cases.

Tell PHWO’s volunteer advocates about your case on the free legal aid page; there is no FIR requirement. Custody and hearings due very soon come first. An advocate may or may not have room to take your case on; that cannot be known beforehand.

Public services in the district

Start with District Headquarters Hospital Bahawalnagar and THQ hospitals at Chishtian, Haroonabad, Fort Abbas and Minchinabad. Rescue 1122 runs boat rescues when the river rises, and answers crashes and fires. Call 15 for police, or 1043 for the women’s helpline. Women enrolled in Kafaalat draw their money via the local BISP centre. The District Zakat Committee Bahawalnagar distributes state Zakat, and lawyers’ names can be had from the District Bar Association Bahawalnagar.

Donate to or volunteer for Bahawalnagar

To help Bahawalnagar families rebuild, send money or goods through Donate, from inside Pakistan or overseas. Zakat and Sadaqah given there are passed on in full to people who qualify. Not sure of your Zakat? Try the Zakat calculator. Meanwhile Sponsor a case links you with one household from the river belt or the desert edge whose need has been checked.

PHWO’s greatest shortages are advocates in Pakistan and fundraisers anywhere. Lawyers from any of the five tehsils can enrol on the volunteer page; volunteers receive a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.

After the water: school, health and debt

The damage from a flood does not end when the water drains. In the months that follow, families in Bahawalnagar’s river villages often face three new problems at once. Children miss school because books, uniforms and sometimes the school building itself were lost. Stagnant water brings fever, diarrhoea and skin infections, and medicine costs pile up. And farmers who lost a crop must borrow again to sow the next one. Each of these is a need you can describe in a request: school fees and supplies, medical costs, or help with a debt. Keep receipts and prescriptions, because they make verification quicker. PHWO’s programmes include emergency relief, health and education among eight areas of work.

Rishta Desk

Families of every religion in Bahawalnagar can use the Rishta Desk free. A live selfie is compared with the photos, and PHWO staff review each profile. Families make the decision, and a match cannot be promised.
