Free help for families in Jamshoro

From University Hostels to Manchhar's Shore: PHWO in Jamshoro

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Jamshoro is a district of contrasts. Its town on the right bank of the Indus is home to the University of Sindh, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences and Mehran University, where tens of thousands of young people from across the province come to study. Beyond the campuses lie the industrial town of Kotri, the shrine city of Sehwan, the fishing villages around Manchhar Lake and the rocky Kohistan hills of Thano Bula Khan. Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO), with no fee of any kind, will consider a request from any corner of it as an NGO in Jamshoro that looks past religion, tribe or politics.

PHWO keeps no office or staff in Jamshoro, Kotri or Sehwan; its sole address is the head office in Larkana. Jamshoro residents and students reach us online, by messaging PHWO from a free PHWO account, or with a classmate or neighbour who volunteers.

Students far from home

Many students in Jamshoro’s universities come from poor families in Tharparkar, Kashmore, Dadu or Badin. They live in hostels or shared rooms and send what they can back home. A broken laptop, a phone that no longer runs the learning apps, or a semester fee that the family cannot pay can end a degree. Few things are requested from PHWO as often as a laptop or phone for classes or paid work, and hostel students in Jamshoro are welcome to ask.

In your request, give your university, department, year and roll number, explain what you need and why your family cannot provide it, and add a live photo of yourself. A volunteer checks it and PHWO then weighs it; a device or fee payment is not guaranteed. Students hunting for part-time online work may also want to read about digital skills, one of the eight areas on the programmes page.

Jamshoro District: census facts

At 11,204 square kilometres, Jamshoro is one of the largest districts in Sindh by area, but much of it is dry hill country, so density is under 100 people per square kilometre. The 2023 Census counted 1,117,308 residents, up from 993,908 in 2017. Nearly 47 percent are urban, thanks to Kotri, Jamshoro town and Sehwan.

According to the Sindh census report, somewhere between four and five in ten Jamshoro residents over ten can read, and roughly half of its school-age children, between 45 and 60 percent, are not enrolled, a reminder that the universities sit beside villages where schooling is still out of reach.

Manchhar Lake and the 2022 floods

Manchhar, near Sehwan, is Pakistan’s largest freshwater lake, and generations of Mohana fishing families have lived on and around it. In 2022 the lake swelled far beyond its usual shoreline, and villages around it and along the Indus near Sehwan went under water. PDMA Sindh’s report of 13 September records 28 affected union councils in Jamshoro and 516 kilometres of damaged road, and 15 relief camps sheltering 35,000 people.

Fishing families who lost boats and nets, and farmers whose land stayed under water, can describe those losses in a request to PHWO. Many also took on debt and need ration.

Sending a request from Jamshoro

Use the Request help form. You can ask for food, a loan to clear, treatment costs, fees, rent, flood losses or a device. A live photo of you is needed. A volunteer may phone you to confirm, after which PHWO decides whether the need is genuine and whether it can be met. Help is arranged only when both are true. Applying is free; report anyone around the campuses who tries to charge for it.

Free legal aid in Jamshoro

Most legal help PHWO is asked for concerns families: khula, maintenance, custody and dowry. Jamshoro District’s family cases are heard at the district courts in Jamshoro and at taluka courts including Kotri and Sehwan.

Write to us on the free legal aid page. You can apply before any FIR is filed. If a child’s custody is involved or the hearing is soon, say so first; volunteer advocates read those ahead of others. We cannot promise that a lawyer will be available or what the judge will decide. The District Legal Empowerment Committee in Jamshoro is another route to free counsel. For immediate danger, dial 15; women can call the Sindh helpline 1094.

Workers in Kotri and pilgrims in Sehwan

Kotri’s factories and the power stations around Jamshoro employ many daily-wage workers who have no contract and no sick pay. In Sehwan, a large number of families earn from the pilgrims who visit the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, selling food, flowers and souvenirs; when crowds fall, so does their income. Both groups can bring requests for ration, rent or debt to PHWO. Tell us what the work is, what it pays in a normal month and what has changed, so the volunteer checking your request understands your situation.

Jamshoro volunteers and donors

University students, law graduates and faculty are ideal volunteers, and advocates at the Jamshoro and Kotri bars are needed most. Volunteering with PHWO earns you a certificate plus letters of appreciation and experience, which students often find useful.

Alumni and families can donate or sponsor a case, for example a student’s fees. Zakat and Sadaqah given through PHWO reach people in need without any deduction; the Zakat calculator can help. Graduates and their parents, whatever their religion, can sign up to the Rishta Desk for free; each profile there is checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff, and the families decide.
