Free help for families in Sahiwal

Welfare Support for Sahiwal and Chichawatni Households

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Sahiwal gave its name to one of the world’s best-known dairy cattle breeds, and the district still lives largely from milk, wheat, cotton and maize. It is also home to Harappa, one of the oldest city sites in South Asia. Most of its people, though, are ordinary farming and labouring families for whom one bad harvest, one sick buffalo or one hospital stay can mean debt. When they look for an NGO in Sahiwal, they usually need something practical and quick to explain.

PHWO, or Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization, offers a free welfare service that people in every province contact online. It does not have an office, agent or employee in Sahiwal or Chichawatni. The organisation’s only premises are in Larkana, Sindh.

Who lives in Sahiwal District

According to the 2023 Census, Sahiwal District had 2,881,811 people. It is mostly rural: only 26.3% live in urban areas. There are two tehsils. Sahiwal tehsil has 1,725,833 people and Chichawatni tehsil 1,155,978. Punjabi is almost everyone’s mother tongue. Many families here trace their roots to canal-colony settlers who arrived when the Lower Bari Doab lands were irrigated, and others to families who migrated from East Punjab in 1947.

Pressure on public hospitals

Most families in the district rely on the District Headquarters Teaching Hospital in Sahiwal city. Its limits made national news in 2019, when several newborns died in the children’s ward during a period when the air-conditioning system broke down in extreme heat (Gulf News). An official inquiry followed. For poor families, the lesson is that even with free treatment, costs for medicines, tests, transport and a relative’s lost wages add up fast.

Asking PHWO for ration, a laptop or debt support

People from Chichawatni and the villages around it have used PHWO’s forms to ask for three things above all: a device for study or work, ration for the month, and help with debt. You can also ask about medical bills, fees and rent.

Go to Request help. Tell volunteers your village or mohalla, who lives in your house, who earns and how much, and exactly what you need. Add a live photo of yourself. Every request is examined and verified. Where PHWO can confirm the need and has the means to meet it, it arranges support; otherwise it cannot. There is no guaranteed outcome and no fixed waiting time.

Free legal aid for Sahiwal family cases

Sahiwal’s family courts handle maintenance for wives and children, recovery of dowry articles, khula and custody. Appeals are heard by the Lahore High Court. If you cannot afford a lawyer, you can describe your case through PHWO’s legal aid form. Volunteer advocates read the requests, giving first attention to custody and to hearings that are about to happen. You are not required to have an FIR. PHWO will try to connect you with a volunteer lawyer if one is available, but it cannot promise this.

Useful numbers and offices in Sahiwal

  • DHQ Teaching Hospital Sahiwal, linked to Sahiwal Medical College.
  • Rescue 1122, including on the busy N-5 national highway that crosses the district.
  • Police: 15. Women’s helpline: 1043.
  • BISP offices in Sahiwal and Chichawatni for Kafaalat support.
  • The Punjab Livestock Department’s veterinary hospitals, useful when a milk animal falls ill.
  • The Deputy Commissioner’s office for official relief.

Milk money and the month's budget

Many households in Sahiwal’s villages keep two or three buffaloes or cows and sell milk to a collector every morning. That daily cash pays for flour, cooking oil and school expenses. When an animal stops giving milk, falls sick, or dies in the summer heat, the income vanishes at once, while the cost of fodder does not. Families then borrow from the milk collector or the village shopkeeper and repay from future sales, which can keep them in debt for a long time.

If this is your situation, say so plainly in your request: how many animals you had, what happened, how much you owe and to whom. Clear detail helps volunteers verify the case.

Volunteering and fundraising from Sahiwal

Sahiwal has a bar association with many young advocates, a university, and a medical college. Any of them can give PHWO a few hours a month. Lawyers are the top need; fundraisers who can speak to their family, friends or colleagues come next. Sign up on the volunteer page; a certificate is issued once you finish, together with written thanks and a signed note of the experience you gained.

Donations and Zakat from Sahiwal

Dairy farmers, grain traders and Sahiwal families overseas can donate in money or in goods. PHWO accepts gifts from Pakistan and abroad, and all Zakat and Sadaqah it receives goes to people in need. To give to one checked case of your choice, see Sponsor a case. The zakat calculator can help with cattle, crops and cash.

Families of every faith can also use PHWO’s free Rishta Desk. Each profile is checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff, and the family always decides; a match cannot be guaranteed.
