Sheikhupura Families: How to Reach PHWO for Free Help

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Sheikhupura sits just west of Lahore, and in many ways it carries the weight of the bigger city’s growth. Mills, chemical plants, steel units and warehouses line the roads towards Lahore and Faisalabad, while the countryside beyond still grows some of Pakistan’s finest basmati rice. Thousands of people commute daily into Lahore for work. When a factory job ends or a harvest fails, many start searching for an NGO in Sheikhupura.

PHWO, the Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization, runs its free welfare service through volunteers, and its head office is in Larkana, Sindh. There is no PHWO office, representative or staff member in Sheikhupura, Muridke or any other town in the district. You reach it on the website, through Message PHWO in your free PHWO account, or by email to info@phwo.org .

Living next to industry

In September 2026 residents of several Sheikhupura neighbourhoods, including Housing Colony, Zafarabad and Akbar Town, complained publicly about smoke and fine ash from nearby industrial units and asked the Environment Protection Department to act (Express Tribune). Doctors quoted in the reports warned of coughing, breathing problems and eye irritation, especially among children and the elderly. ProPakistani carried similar accounts from residents who said repeated complaints to officials had brought little change (ProPakistani).

Industrial work also carries its own risks. Burns, falls and machine injuries in small units without proper safety equipment can leave a breadwinner unable to work for months, and informal workers seldom have insurance or sick pay to fall back on. If an injury has pushed your family into hardship, you can mention it in a PHWO request along with any hospital papers.

For low-income families, pollution becomes a money problem too: more visits to clinics, more medicine, and more days when a parent cannot work.

Sheikhupura District in numbers

  • Population (Census 2023): 4,049,418.
  • Urban share: 38.3%.
  • Tehsils include: Sheikhupura, Ferozewala, Muridke and Safdarabad.
  • Language: Punjabi for nearly everyone, with Urdu in the city’s housing schemes.
  • Landmark: the Mughal-era Hiran Minar, just outside the city.

When the paycheque stops: ration, debt and devices

People from Sheikhupura’s industrial belt often write to PHWO after losing a job, or when overtime is cut and the salary no longer covers rent. The three requests that appear most across Punjab also appear here: ration for the month, help with debt, and a laptop or phone for a student or a young person seeking work.

You can submit yours on the Request help page. Give your full address, household size and income, and explain the need. Add a clear live photo of yourself, and describe the problem in your own words. A volunteer reviews every detail. PHWO only arranges assistance where the need has been verified and it is able to meet it, and it never guarantees an outcome or names a date.

Ferozewala and the Lahore commute

Ferozewala tehsil, right on Lahore’s northern edge, had 997,246 people at the 2023 Census, packed at nearly 2,000 per square kilometre. Many residents work in Lahore’s markets, construction sites and factories and spend a large share of their pay on daily travel. When fares rise or a job moves further away, the household budget breaks first at the kitchen. Paddy-growing villages further west face a different problem: work is plentiful at transplanting and harvest time but scarce for months in between, so families borrow through the lean season.

Both groups can explain their situation to PHWO. Some families in the district also carry heavy loans taken to send a son abroad through an agent; if an agent cheated you, report it to the Federal Investigation Agency as well.

Free family legal aid

Sheikhupura’s district and family courts hear cases for maintenance, khula, dower and custody, while the Lahore High Court, where appeals are heard, is less than an hour away. PHWO’s legal aid is for people who cannot pay a lawyer. Volunteer advocates study each request. An FIR is not required. Children’s custody and hearings in the coming days are dealt with first. Please keep in mind that representation depends on a volunteer being free, and PHWO cannot promise it.

Local services for emergencies and support

  • DHQ Hospital Sheikhupura for public treatment.
  • Rescue 1122 for road crashes on the motorway link roads and industrial accidents.
  • Punjab Police emergency 15, and the 1043 helpline for women.

  • The Punjab Environment Protection Department for pollution complaints.
  • Social Security hospitals and dispensaries, available to workers whose employer has registered them.

Volunteer, donate or sponsor from Sheikhupura

Advocates at the Sheikhupura bar, and anyone who can raise funds, can volunteer with PHWO. Anyone who gives time is thanked with a PHWO certificate, and on request with letters that describe the work done and the experience gained.

Factory owners, rice traders and Sheikhupura families abroad can donate cash or goods, from inside or outside Pakistan. All Zakat and Sadaqah is spent on people in need. You can also pick one verified family through Sponsor a case, or calculate what you owe with the zakat calculator.

Families of any faith may use the free Rishta Desk, where each profile is checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff, and the families themselves decide. No match is promised.
