Between the Bolan and the Plains: Asking an NGO in Sibi for Support

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Sibi lies where the Bolan Pass opens onto the flat plains of Kachhi, a railway town on the old line from Jacobabad to Quetta and home to one of Balochistan’s best-known yearly fairs. It is also famous for its heat. If you are a resident of Sibi, Lehri, Sangan or Kot Mandai and have searched for an NGO in Sibi, this page explains what a welfare body far from your town can and cannot do for you, and which local services exist too.

Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) does not have any office, centre or person on staff in Sibi. It operates from one address in Larkana, Sindh, not far across the provincial border, and reaches Balochistan families through its website, PHWO account messages and volunteers. There is never a fee. Volunteers go through each request, and help is organised only for needs that are confirmed and within reach; there is no guarantee of any particular result.

Sibi's people: what the Census found

The 2023 Census counted 224,148 people in Sibi District, over about 7,121 square kilometres (PBS district table). Nearly 31 percent live in urban areas, mostly in Sibi city itself, and households average about seven members. The town is a meeting point of communities, so Balochi, Sindhi, Saraiki and Brahui can all be heard in the bazaar.

Heat, floods and farm work

Sibi regularly records some of the highest summer temperatures in Pakistan. For labourers in fields, brick kilns and construction, June and July can be dangerous, and hospital bills after heatstroke are a real burden. Electricity cuts make matters worse for the elderly and for babies.

Water is both a blessing and a threat. The Nari river and hill torrents feed the canals and farmland, but in 2022 heavy monsoon rain turned them into floods that damaged houses, roads and crops across Sibi and the neighbouring Kachhi plain (ReliefWeb flood page). Many sharecroppers lost a season’s income and borrowed to replant, and some are still paying those loans back.

Across the country, the things PHWO is asked for most are monthly ration, money to clear debts, and a phone or laptop for studies or earning. In Sibi, debt from floods or illness is a frequent theme, and young people who finish college often need a device to apply for jobs or to learn a skill online.

Getting help from an NGO in Sibi: a simple route

There is nothing to queue for. Fill in Request help from a mobile phone, or message PHWO from your free PHWO account. Describe your family, your income and the exact problem. Add a live photo of yourself; if you have hospital receipts, a flood damage slip or a loan note, send pictures of those as well.

A volunteer might phone you to ask questions. Answer truthfully, since false details slow everything down. If a person in Sibi asks you for money to ‘register’ your request with PHWO, refuse: the organisation charges nothing and allows no one to collect cash on its behalf.

Courts and legal advice for Sibi families

Sibi is a divisional headquarters, and its district and sessions courts handle cases from the town and surrounding tehsils, including family courts for divorce, dower and maintenance. PHWO’s Free legal aid is used mainly by people with such family matters: a woman seeking khula, a mother asking for her children’s maintenance, a father in a custody dispute. A volunteer advocate reviews your papers and tells you where you stand.

An FIR is not required before you ask. If a custody hearing or another urgent date is coming up, mention it at the top of your request so it can be looked at sooner. Whether an advocate can represent you in court depends on availability and is not assured.

Ways people in Sibi can give back

Landowners, shopkeepers and railway families in Sibi who want their zakat to reach genuine cases can use Donate, and the Zakat calculator helps work out the amount. Zakat and Sadaqah routed through PHWO reach needy people in full. A donor can also choose one verified family through Sponsor a case.

Lawyers practising in Sibi are especially welcome as volunteers, and so are fundraisers in Pakistan or abroad. Sign up on the Volunteer page. Each volunteer gets a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.

Families preparing for a wedding, perhaps after meeting relatives during the Sibi Mela season each February, can also look at the Rishta Desk. It costs nothing, welcomes every faith and checks each profile with a live selfie and a PHWO staff review. Parents and the young people themselves take every decision; a suitable match is never assured. Sharing only what you are comfortable sharing, and meeting in the presence of family, remains the wise way.

Frequently asked questions

Is PHWO's Larkana office close enough for me to visit from Sibi?

You can, but there is no need. Every request from Sibi is handled online, and Larkana is the only PHWO office anywhere.

We borrowed to replant after the 2022 floods and cannot repay. Can I ask PHWO?

Yes. Explain the loan and attach any proof. Volunteers check it, and a decision depends on what can be verified and met.

My father collapsed from heatstroke and the hospital bill is unpaid. What should I send?

Send the hospital slip or bill, along with a live photo, through Request help.

Can a volunteer lawyer help with a maintenance case in the Sibi family court?

A volunteer advocate can read your file and advise you through Free legal aid. Appearing in court for you is not promised.

I am a teacher in Sibi. How can I help?

Register as a volunteer. Helping neighbours fill in their request forms is useful work.
