Tobacco Fields and Gulf Letters: An NGO in Swabi You Can Reach From Your Phone

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Swabi lies between the Indus and the hills north of Mardan, a district of tobacco and maize fields, busy bazaars and large villages where almost every lane has someone working in the Gulf. The Tarbela reservoir is on one side and the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute at Topi draws students from across the country. Yet behind the new houses built with remittance money, many families struggle. People who search for an NGO in Swabi are often dealing with a worker who has come home without a job, a medical emergency, or loans taken for a visa.

Families from all four tehsils, Swabi, Topi, Lahor and Razar, can apply to Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO). It keeps no office, centre or staff member there; the organisation’s single office is in Larkana, Sindh. You contact PHWO through its website, Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or through a volunteer, and nothing is charged. Requests are verified and assessed, and no outcome is guaranteed.

A crowded, fast-growing district

The 2023 Census counted 1,894,600 people in Swabi District living on 1,543 square kilometres, some 1,228 to each square kilometre (PBS census, Table 1 for KP). Around 18 percent lived in towns, households averaged 6.7 people, and the population was growing by about 2.6 percent a year. Pashto is spoken in the great majority of homes, according to the census language table.

Land is divided into ever smaller plots as families grow. That is one reason so many young men look for work in Karachi, Islamabad or the Gulf.

Remittances, visa debts and returning workers

A Gulf job usually begins with a debt. Families borrow for the visa, the agent’s fee and the ticket, expecting to repay from the first year’s wages. When the job disappears, the employer does not pay, or the worker falls ill and has to come home, that debt stays behind. Some families end up owing more than they earn in a year.

If this is your situation, describe it honestly in Request help: who went abroad, what happened, how much is owed and to whom. Attach anything that shows it, such as a return ticket, an employer letter or loan notes. Nationally, loans, food and a study or work device top the list of what people request. A volunteer looks into the story first; nothing is arranged until it holds up and can be met.

Farm labour and tobacco work

Swabi’s tobacco crop employs many hands at planting, harvest and curing time, but the work is seasonal. Labourers and small tenant farmers may be idle for months, and the curing barns are hot and hard on the lungs. When a daily-wage earner falls sick, the household often has no savings at all.

You can ask for help with medical bills, ration while an earner recovers, school and college fees, or rent. Where a son or daughter is studying at a college in Swabi or Topi without a laptop, mention it along with proof of enrolment.

To apply, open the form on any phone, or message PHWO from your free PHWO account. Explain in Pashto or Urdu who lives in the house and what is needed, and add a live photo of yourself. A volunteer may ring back with questions. Do not pay any person in your village who claims they can get the request approved faster; that is not how PHWO works, and nobody may take money for it.

Women who work from home, stitching, embroidering or keeping livestock, can ask about the women’s empowerment, digital and vocational areas listed in Programmes.

How free legal aid works for Swabi cases

The district and sessions courts at Swabi hear family, civil and criminal matters. Inheritance fights over land are frequent here, as are family cases about maintenance, dower and custody. Appeals go to the Peshawar High Court and its benches.

With Free legal aid you upload your documents and explain the problem in a few lines. Volunteer advocates study them and advise you. You can ask even if no FIR has been registered. Matters concerning children, or with a hearing very soon, are taken up first. An advocate appearing in court for you is possible in some cases but never promised. Litigants without money can also try the Swabi bar association or ask the district legal empowerment committee for a state-paid lawyer.
