Dry Plains, Big Families: Asking an NGO in Lakki Marwat for Help Online

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Lakki Marwat spreads across the dry, sandy plains between Bannu and the Indus, home of the Marwat tribe and of villages that depend on rain, tubewells and the small Kurram and Gambila rivers. Gram, wheat and millet grow when the rain comes; when it does not, the fields lie bare. Many men serve in the army or police, or travel to Karachi and the Gulf for labour. Families who search for an NGO in Lakki Marwat often need ration after a dry year, help with a loan, or advice on a family case.

Marwat families may apply to Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) at any time, though it has nobody posted in the district, and no camp or office there either. The only PHWO office is in Larkana, Sindh. People apply online, through Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or ask a volunteer to help them. All services are free. Each request is verified and assessed. Aid follows a confirmed need that can actually be met, and even so, none is certain.

One million people on a thirsty plain

Lakki Marwat passed the one-million mark in the 2023 count, with 1,040,856 people on 3,296 square kilometres (PBS census, KP districts). Fewer than one in ten lived in towns, and the average household had 7.8 members. Nearly 99 percent of residents speak Pashto as their mother tongue, according to PBS Table 11.

The district has three tehsils: Lakki Marwat, Serai Naurang and Bettani, the last of which lies in the hills along the border with the former tribal areas.

Rain-fed farming and the cost of a bad year

Much of Lakki Marwat’s farmland depends on rain. A good year brings gram and wheat; a dry one leaves farmers with nothing to sell and animals to feed. Tubewells help where there is power and money for diesel, but many small farmers cannot afford them. Heavy rain can be just as damaging when hill torrents rush across the plain, as happened in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the 2022 monsoon.

After a lost harvest, families borrow from shopkeepers for flour and ghee, and the debt grows. If this is your household, explain it in Request help. Groceries, loan repayment, medicine, fees and rent are all fair things to ask about. Include what you owe, to whom and for what purpose.

Soldiers' and labourers' families

Lakki Marwat sends many young men into the armed forces, the police and the Frontier Corps, and many others into labour in Karachi’s ports, markets and building sites. When a soldier is disabled or a labourer is injured in the city, the family back home can lose its only income overnight. Families of those who died in service may receive official support, but gaps often remain, especially for education.

If your family has lost its earner, tell PHWO what support you already receive and what is still missing. A student whose studies are at risk can ask about fees or a laptop or phone for online study. Attach proof of enrolment.

How an NGO in Lakki Marwat can work from a distance

You do not need to go to Bannu, Peshawar or anywhere else. The whole process takes place on a mobile phone:

  • Fill in the form at Request help or message PHWO from your free PHWO account.
  • Include a live photo of yourself, and explain your need in Pashto or Urdu.
  • Attach any bills, loan notes or fee vouchers.
  • Leave your mobile switched on so a volunteer can reach you.

Never pay anyone to handle your request. Applying costs nothing, and a person who asks you for cash on PHWO’s behalf is not genuine.

Free legal aid for the Lakki Marwat courts

Lakki has its own sessions and family courts, and appeals from here are heard by the high court bench at Bannu. Land disputes and family matters are the most common issues: inheritance shares, dower, maintenance, khula and custody.

With Free legal aid you upload documents and describe the problem. Volunteer advocates read them and explain the options. No FIR is needed to ask for advice. Custody files and near court dates are opened first. A volunteer lawyer could be able to represent you in some cases, but PHWO cannot promise it. Members of the Lakki bar occasionally take on poor clients’ cases too.
