Heat, Dates and Distance: Getting Support From an NGO in Turbat and the Kech Valley

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Turbat, the main town of Kech District, sits in a date-growing valley on the Kech River, with the mountains of Makran on every side and the Iranian border not far to the west. Summers here are some of the hottest on the planet, jobs are scarce, and the nearest big city is hundreds of kilometres away. For people in Turbat, Tump, Mand, Buleda and Dasht, searching online for an NGO in Turbat is often the only realistic way to ask for help.

Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) accepts those requests. It does not have any office, centre or staff in Kech; the organisation works from a single office in Larkana, Sindh. Families here send their application over the internet, message PHWO from a free PHWO account, or work with a volunteer. All services are free. Requests are verified and assessed, and help is arranged where a verified need can be met; no result is promised in advance.

Kech in the 2023 Census

Kech District had 1,060,931 residents in 2023, with roughly 36 percent living in urban areas, mainly Turbat (Pakistan Bureau of Statistics). Unusually for Balochistan, households are small, averaging about four people, which often reflects men working away from home. The language table shows that Balochi is the mother tongue of nearly everyone, over 99 percent.

With so many men in the Gulf, in Karachi or on the road, women are frequently left to run households alone, sometimes without their own CNIC or bank account. If that describes you, a male relative can help you apply, but the request should be about your family’s real situation.

One of the hottest places on Earth

On 28 May 2017, Turbat recorded 53.7 Β°C. The World Meteorological Organization later verified it as one of the highest temperatures ever reliably measured anywhere (WMO announcement). Heat like this is not just uncomfortable. Outdoor labourers collapse, the old and very young fall ill, and electricity cuts leave families without fans. Medical bills for heatstroke and the cost of keeping a house cool push people into debt every summer.

If illness, a hospital bill or summer power bills have left you in debt, you can say so on the Request help form. Attach the hospital slip or bills along with a live photo of yourself.

Work, dates and the border: why people look for an NGO in Turbat

Kech’s dates are among the best known in Pakistan, and the harvest brings seasonal work in orchards and packing. Beyond that, many households have depended on small-scale trade with Iran, on driving, or on remittances from Oman and the UAE. When border crossings are restricted or a Gulf job ends, incomes can vanish.

Security problems in parts of Makran have made things harder still. Transport is sometimes suspended, mobile internet has been switched off in some periods, and shops close early. Families that were already living hand to mouth find that even a few days without work leaves them borrowing for flour. If your connection is unreliable, send your request whenever you get a signal; there is no deadline, and a volunteer can follow up later if needed.

Across Pakistan, the three most frequent requests PHWO gets are for food, for settling debts, and for a laptop or phone. In Turbat the last one matters a great deal: a student at the University of Turbat or a young person hoping to freelance may need a device to study or earn without leaving home.

Courts and free legal aid in Turbat

The High Court of Balochistan has a bench at Turbat, on Commissionery Road, which saves Makran families the journey to Quetta for appeals (BHC Turbat Bench). The district and sessions courts, including family courts, are in Turbat too.

PHWO’s Free legal aid is mostly used for family law: khula, maintenance and the custody of children. Volunteer advocates read the documents you send and advise you. You may ask even if no FIR exists. Custody cases and anything with an early hearing date get priority. Representation in court cannot be guaranteed. The Kech district bar can also help a litigant with no money find counsel.

Supporting people in Kech from near or far

If you are from Kech and working in Muscat, Dubai or Karachi, you already know how much a small amount can mean at home. Through Donate you can give money or goods from any country, and PHWO hands Zakat and Sadaqah over whole to those in need. Sponsor a case lets you pick a single verified household.

Balochi-speaking volunteers are very useful for translating requests. Advocates practising in Turbat, and fundraisers in the Gulf, are needed too. Sign up through Volunteer; volunteers are given a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.
