Cotton Country Needs: An NGO in Vehari for Burewala and Mailsi Families

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Vehari sits in the cotton belt of southern Punjab, between Multan and Pakpattan, with the Sutlej along its southern edge. White cotton fields, ginning factories and grain markets set the rhythm of life in Vehari, Burewala and Mailsi. When the cotton crop fails, pickers, farmers and ginning workers all suffer, and many begin looking for an NGO in Vehari.

PHWO (Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization) is volunteer-led, blind to sect and religion, open to callers from any province, and never paid by those it helps. Vehari, Burewala and Mailsi have no PHWO premises, camp or local agent. The only office is in Larkana, Sindh. People from this district reach PHWO online, through Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or by email to info@phwo.org .

Vehari's people and places

The 2023 Census counted 3,430,421 people in Vehari District, about 23% of them urban. There are three tehsils: Burewala, the largest at over 1.2 million people; Vehari, at about 1.1 million; and Mailsi. The mother-tongue table shows a mixed district: Punjabi for about 74% of people and Saraiki for about 19%, with Saraiki more common towards Mailsi and the south.

Burewala is a busy textile and market town, where spinning mills and shops draw workers from the surrounding chaks. Mailsi, near the Sutlej and the Mailsi siphon, is more rural. Travelling from its outlying villages to the district hospital can take hours, which makes emergencies harder, and many families there still depend on a single harvest and a few animals.

Cotton's hard years and the 2025 flood

A cotton crop is exposed to pests, heatwaves and swings in price, and a bad year hurts everyone in the chain: the farmer who borrowed for seed and spray, the pickers who are paid by the amount they gather, and the ginning workers whose season gets shorter. Some small farmers have switched part of their land to wheat and maize, which can mean fewer days of paid picking in the villages.

In August 2025 the Sutlej added a new blow. Dawn reported 23 villages in Vehari district submerged by 29 August (Dawn), and news reports described dykes near Burewala giving way. If your family was affected, mention it in your request and attach photos; for compensation, register with the Deputy Commissioner and PDMA Punjab.

Asking for financial help in Vehari

  1. Go to Request help.
  2. Say what you need: groceries, a hospital or medicine bill, school or college dues, rent, a loan to clear, a laptop, or cotton and cattle lost to the flood.
  3. Add a live photo of yourself, and explain your need yourself, in Punjabi, Saraiki or Urdu.

A volunteer confirms the facts, then assesses the need. Where it is genuine and can be met, support is organised. No outcome or date is promised, and nothing is charged.

Free legal aid for Vehari cases

Disputes are tried in Vehari city, Burewala or Mailsi, and appeals move on to the high court’s Multan bench. Most people who need a lawyer here are caught up in land or inheritance quarrels, tenancy rows or family matters such as maintenance and custody.

Explain your case through free legal aid; an FIR is not a condition. Custody questions and Burewala or Mailsi hearings due within days are taken up first. Whether an advocate can act for you depends on who has room, so it cannot be promised.

Government help in Vehari district

State services in the district begin with District Headquarters Hospital Vehari and the THQ hospitals at Burewala and Mailsi. Crashes on the Vehari-Multan road, ginning-factory fires and flood rescues near the Sutlej are handled by Rescue 1122. For the police, 15; for women facing abuse, 1043. BISP pays Kafaalat to registered women. The District Zakat Committee Vehari gives out government Zakat. The District Bar Association Vehari can name local advocates.

Women cotton pickers

Cotton picking is mostly done by women, often with their daughters, for a small payment per maund. Few have any savings, and a week of illness means a week without income. If you are a picker who cannot work, a widow, or a mother whose husband is ill, you can apply in your own name. Ration, medical costs and school fees are all needs you can describe. Among PHWO’s eight programmes are women’s empowerment and trades that can be practised at home.

Donate or volunteer from Vehari

Veharis settled in Multan, Lahore, the Gulf or Europe can reach their home villages through Donate, sending either money or goods. Zakat and Sadaqah given there are spent to the last rupee on families who qualify. Use the Zakat calculator first if you are unsure of your Zakat; Sponsor a case lets you help one confirmed Vehari family.

Of all volunteers, the rarest are advocates in Pakistan and people able to raise funds at home or overseas. Lawyers at the Vehari, Burewala and Mailsi courts would be a real asset. Enrol on the volunteer page and your work is recognised with a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.

Rishta Desk

Vehari families of all faiths can use the Rishta Desk without paying anything. Profiles are checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff. Every choice rests with the families; nothing can be promised.
