Old Fort Sandeman, New Hardships: Asking an NGO in Zhob for Support

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Zhob, once called Fort Sandeman, is a quiet town on the Zhob River in the far north-east of Balochistan, where the N-50 climbs from Dera Ismail Khan towards Quetta. The district is huge and thinly peopled: mountain ranges, pine-nut forests in the hills, orchards in the valleys and long stretches of dry grazing land. Many families keep flocks, grow apples and grapes where there is water, or send men to Quetta, Karachi and the Gulf. Anyone typing NGO in Zhob may be struggling after a dry year, a road accident, a hospital trip or a loan they cannot clear.

Zhob households are free to contact Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO), which serves the whole country from one office in Larkana, Sindh. It has no staff, centre or room anywhere in Zhob Division. You reach it on the website, through Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or through a volunteer. Nobody pays anything. Each request is examined by volunteers, help depends on a need being confirmed and possible to meet, and PHWO makes no promises of an outcome.

A vast district with few people

At the 2023 Census Zhob District had 355,692 residents on 15,987 square kilometres, just over 22 people per square kilometre (Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Balochistan Table 1). Roughly 13 in 100 were town dwellers, and an average home held 7.4 people. Zhob sub-division, which includes the town, accounted for 284,620 people. Pashto is the language of nearly all homes, as recorded in the census language table.

Such distances mean a trip to a specialist hospital, or to the High Court, can take a full day or more.

Flocks, orchards and pine nuts

Livestock is the backbone of rural Zhob. Families move sheep and goats between summer and winter pastures, and a drought that dries the grazing can force them to sell animals cheaply or borrow to feed them. Apple and grape orchards need irrigation that depends on karez channels, springs and tubewells, all of which suffer when rain fails. In the forested hills, the chilghoza pine-nut harvest brings seasonal cash, but a poor crop or forest fire can wipe it out.

Tell PHWO what your household depends on and what has gone wrong. Through Request help you can ask about food, debts, medical care, children’s fees or rent.

The long road and its dangers

The N-50 and the Zhob-Quetta road carry buses, trucks and pick-ups over long, lonely stretches. Road crashes are a real risk, and when a driver or passenger breadwinner is killed or disabled, families can be left with no income and heavy medical costs. Patients who must travel to Quetta or Dera Ismail Khan for treatment also spend heavily on transport and lodging.

If an accident or a long illness has put your family in difficulty, attach medical reports and receipts. Volunteers need to see the full picture to assess what may be possible.

Winter adds its own costs. Snow can close the higher roads, prices rise in the bazaar, and families must buy wood or gas for heating. A household that could not stock up before the cold months because of illness or lost work can explain that too.

Steps to apply from Zhob

  • Use the online form, or message PHWO from your free PHWO account whenever you have signal.
  • Explain the need briefly, in Pashto if you prefer, and add photos of your home if they help.
  • Include a live photo of yourself and any relevant receipts or reports.
  • Keep a working number; a volunteer may try to call you.

If anyone in the bazaar or a village asks you for money to arrange PHWO help, do not pay. The organisation charges nothing.

Legal questions in Zhob

The district and sessions courts at Zhob deal with civil, criminal and family matters, and higher appeals go to the provincial high court. Common problems include land and grazing disputes, inheritance, dower, maintenance and custody. Many families have long relied on elders to settle quarrels, but women and children sometimes need the protection a court can give.

Send your documents and a short explanation through Free legal aid. Volunteer advocates will explain your rights and options. No FIR is necessary. Matters about children, and cases with hearings soon, are dealt with first. A volunteer taking your case in court cannot be promised. Zhob’s bar association is a further option for anyone unable to hire counsel.
