Free help for families in Bhakkar

NGO in Bhakkar: Free Support Between the Indus and the Thal Desert

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Bhakkar is a district of two faces. Along the Indus in the west, the kacha land floods and then grows good crops; to the east lies the Thal, a wide stretch of sand where gram (chickpea) is sown and families wait for rain. Life in both places can be hard, and many people in Darya Khan, Kalur Kot and Mankera search for an NGO in Bhakkar when a harvest, a job or their health lets them down.

PHWO (Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization) depends on volunteers, takes requests from Karachi to Gilgit, and asks no fee of anyone. Bhakkar district has no PHWO office, camp or local agent of any kind. The one office is in Larkana, Sindh. People here reach PHWO online, through Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or by email to info@phwo.org .

Bhakkar by the numbers

Bhakkar District was home to 1,957,470 people at the 2023 Census, and only 18% of them are town dwellers, a very low share even for south-west Punjab. The district has four tehsils: Bhakkar, Darya Khan, Kalur Kot and Mankera. Saraiki is the mother tongue of about 79% of residents, with Punjabi at around 10% and Urdu at about 7.5%.

Most households live from farming (gram, wheat and, where water allows, sugarcane and cotton), livestock, and labour. Mankera, deep in the Thal, is especially remote.

What makes life hard in Bhakkar

  • The river: in high-water years the Indus floods low-lying villages in Darya Khan and Kalur Kot tehsils and erodes farmland.
  • The desert: in the Thal, a dry year means little gram and little fodder, and underground water can be brackish.
  • Distance: specialist treatment usually means travelling to Sargodha, Faisalabad or Lahore.
  • Debt: farmers borrow for seed and fertiliser against the next crop, and one bad season can leave a family owing for years.

Financial help in Bhakkar: what you can ask for

Through Request help a Bhakkar household can seek food, treatment money, fees, rent, relief from a loan, a student laptop, or help after the river or a drought has done its damage. You will be asked for a clear live photo of yourself and to explain your need in your own words; Saraiki is perfectly fine.

Volunteers verify each request and assess it. If the need is genuine and can be met, help is arranged. PHWO does not promise any outcome or date, and applying costs nothing.

Free legal aid in Bhakkar

Bhakkar city has the sessions court, and Darya Khan, Kalur Kot and Mankera have civil and family judges. Any appeal goes up to the Lahore High Court. Disputes over land on the shifting river belt, inheritance, and family matters such as maintenance and custody are common here.

Explain your problem on the free legal aid page. You do not need an FIR to ask. Children’s custody and imminent hearings come first. A lawyer can only be arranged if one is available, so it cannot be guaranteed.

Public services in Bhakkar

Bhakkar families can also turn to several government services. Serious illness usually means the District Headquarters Hospital Bhakkar; Darya Khan, Kalur Kot and Mankera have THQ hospitals of their own. Rescue 1122 covers road crashes on the long Thal roads as well as flood rescue near the Indus. For police, dial 15; a woman in danger can call 1043. Kafaalat payments are handled at each tehsil’s BISP office, government Zakat by the District Zakat Committee Bhakkar, and the District Bar Association Bhakkar can help you find an advocate.

Women and girls in the Thal

In remote Thal villages, women often do much of the farm and livestock work but own little and earn less. A widow or a woman whose husband cannot work may be left with no steady income at all. Women’s empowerment and skills for earning are among PHWO’s eight programmes. A woman can request support such as a sewing machine, livestock she lost, or school fees for her daughters, through the same request form. Explain what you need and how it would help your family. Every request goes through checking and assessment.

Donating and volunteering from Bhakkar

If you are from Bhakkar and working in a city or abroad, you can help families back home through Donate. Both cash and goods are accepted; Zakat and Sadaqah are not cut in any way before reaching qualifying families. The Zakat calculator helps you with the arithmetic, and Sponsor a case links you with a single checked family from the Thal or the river belt.

Lawyers in the Bhakkar courts and fundraisers in Pakistan and abroad are the volunteers most needed. Enrol on the volunteer page; a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter follow in recognition.

Rishta Desk

The Rishta Desk is available without charge to Bhakkar households, whatever their religion. Profiles are checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff. Families decide for themselves; a match is never guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

We live in a Thal village near Mankera with poor phone signal. How can we apply?

You can fill in the form whenever you reach a signal, or ask a relative in town to send it for you. Include a live photo of yourself.

Is there a PHWO office in Bhakkar or Darya Khan?

No. Neither town has one; PHWO's sole office is in Larkana, Sindh. Contact it by messaging PHWO from a free PHWO account, at info@phwo.org or through the website.

The Indus washed away part of our land. Can we ask for help?

Yes. Describe the loss and attach photos. Your request will be verified and assessed; help is not guaranteed.

We owe money to a seed dealer after a failed gram crop. Is debt considered?

Yes, a seed or fertiliser loan counts. Say who you owe, how much, and why the loan was taken.

I am a lawyer in Kalur Kot. How can I help?

Please sign up on the volunteer page. Lawyers willing to handle family and land matters in Bhakkar's courts are especially wanted.

My father needs treatment in Faisalabad but we cannot afford the travel and tests. What can we ask for?

You can request help with medical costs, and you may mention the expense of travelling and staying near the hospital. Attach the referral letter from DHQ Bhakkar or the doctor, any test reports and an estimate of the cost. The request is verified and assessed like every other; PHWO cannot say in advance whether support will be arranged.
