Thal Sands and Indus Floods: What an NGO in Layyah Can Do for You

All PHWO services are free. Nobody may ask you for money in PHWO’s name. Β· Message PHWO Β· info@phwo.org

Layyah is a district of contrasts. On its western side the Indus spreads wide, feeding rich kacha land that floods in bad years; to the east, the dunes of the Thal stretch towards Chaubara, where gram and a few thin crops depend on rain and tube wells. Families from both worlds, the river and the desert, look for an NGO in Layyah when a harvest fails, the river takes their home, or illness strikes.

PHWO, the Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization, is kept going by volunteers; it hears from families in every province and asks them for nothing. It has no office, camp or agent in Layyah, Karor Lal Esan or Chaubara. PHWO’s one office is in Larkana, Sindh. People here reach it online, through Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or by email to info@phwo.org .

Layyah district in the 2023 Census

It found 2,102,386 people in Layyah District, and just 18% of them live in towns. There are three tehsils: Layyah (about 1.12 million), Karor Lal Esan and Chaubara. Chaubara is the most sparsely settled, with around 109 people per square kilometre. The mother-tongue table shows Saraiki for about 67% of residents and Punjabi for about 28%. Many households speak both at home and in the market.

Farming (gram, wheat, cotton and sugarcane), livestock and labour are the main sources of income.

The Indus in August 2025

In August 2025 severe flooding hit low-lying areas of Layyah along the Indus. Dawn reported villages inundated, thousands of acres of crops ruined, and the guide bunds and dykes supporting the Layyah-Taunsa Bridge washed away (Dawn). Riverside families lost cotton, sesame and livestock, and some lost their homes.

Riverside families who lost crops or homes can list the damage and add pictures to their request. For the government’s own survey, get registered with the Layyah DC office and PDMA Punjab.

Desert life in Chaubara and the Thal

In the Thal, a family’s wealth is often its goats, sheep and a few acres of sandy land. A dry spell means no fodder, and animals may have to be sold cheaply. Clean drinking water can be scarce. The nearest hospital may be hours away, and many children, especially girls, stop school early because the nearest high school is far off. None of this is a disaster in the headlines, but it is hardship that can be described in a request.

Asking PHWO for help in Layyah

Whether you farm gram in the Thal or cotton on the kacha, Request help is where to explain your situation: a bare kitchen, a sick child, unpaid fees or rent, money owed to a dealer, a student with no laptop, or animals and crops lost to flood or drought. The form asks for a clear live photo of you, and you can explain your need in Saraiki, Punjabi or Urdu.

A volunteer checks the details and then weighs them. If it is genuine and something can be done, PHWO arranges it. Neither the outcome nor the timing is promised, and asking costs nothing.

Free legal aid in Layyah

Trials are held at Layyah’s own courts and at Karor Lal Esan and Chaubara; anything appealed further ends up in Multan, where the Lahore High Court has a bench. River-belt land, inheritance, family disputes and tenancy produce most local cases.

Explain your problem through free legal aid, with no need for an FIR first. Custody matters and hearings in the next few days are dealt with ahead of others. An advocate takes a case only when free to do so, so representation is never assured.

Public services in Layyah district

Government help starts with District Headquarters Hospital Layyah and THQ hospitals at Karor Lal Esan and Chaubara. Crashes on the MM Road and flood calls from the Indus kacha are both handled by Rescue 1122. Emergencies involving crime go to 15; abused women can phone 1043. Kafaalat payments are made via the BISP tehsil office, government Zakat is run by the District Zakat Committee Layyah, and the District Bar Association Layyah can suggest a lawyer.

How you can help Layyah

If you left Layyah for Lahore, Karachi or the Gulf, the Donate page is a direct way to send money or goods back. Zakat and Sadaqah sent that way reach eligible families completely. Before you give, the Zakat calculator can confirm your amount; afterwards, Sponsor a case can match you to a single Thal or riverside household.

Advocates and fundraisers are the volunteers PHWO needs above all. Lawyers from Layyah, Karor or Chaubara are warmly welcome on the volunteer page, where every volunteer earns a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.

Students and young workers from Layyah

Layyah has colleges and a university sub-campus, but a family earning from a few acres of Thal land often cannot manage fees, hostel costs and books at the same time. Some young people leave their studies to work in Karachi’s factories or on construction sites in the Gulf. If you are a student who needs help with fees or a laptop, apply through the request form and explain your course, the costs and how the support would change things for you. If you have left school and want to learn a trade that pays, such as motorcycle repair, solar panel fitting or tailoring, say so as well. PHWO’s programmes page describes its education, digital skills and vocational work. As with every request, it is verified and assessed first, and nothing is guaranteed.

Rishta Desk

Layyah families of any religion can use the free Rishta Desk. Profiles are checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff. The families decide, and a match is not assured.
