Gujranwala makes things. Ceiling fans, electric motors, sanitary fittings, cutlery, tiles and tons of processed rice leave its workshops every day, and the city’s small factories employ hundreds of thousands of people on modest wages. Search trends show that many of them look for an NGO in Gujranwala when a job ends, a debt grows, or a child’s studies are at risk.
One free option is PHWO (Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization). Before anything else: PHWO does not operate an office, centre or team in Gujranwala. Larkana, Sindh, is home to its single head office, and people across Pakistan use its services online.
A district of workshops, rice fields and emigrants
The 2023 Census counted 5,959,750 people in Gujranwala District, of whom 60.3% live in urban areas. Beyond the city, tehsils such as Kamoke, Nowshera Virkan and Wazirabad are rice country, and Wazirabad is known for its cutlery. Punjabi is the everyday language almost everywhere.
Like Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin next door, Gujranwala has a long tradition of young men leaving for Europe and the Gulf. Some go legally and send money home. Others borrow heavily to pay agents, and when the journey fails the family is left with the debt.
Smoke in winter, floodwater in summer
Gujranwala’s brick kilns, steel re-rolling units and small furnaces add to Punjab’s winter smog. The provincial Environment Protection Agency has closed industrial units here in the past for breaking emission rules; one crackdown sealed 242 units in the district (Zameen News). Closures protect health but also leave kiln and factory workers without wages for weeks at a time, often at the start of winter.
When the Chenab rose in August 2025, villages in the Wazirabad area were among those flooded, alongside hundreds more in neighbouring Sialkot and Gujrat (Aaj News). Rice crops were lost just before harvest. Families who took seed and fertiliser on credit now face both a lost crop and a loan. PHWO accepts disaster-loss requests, and they are checked like any other.
What you can ask PHWO for from Gujranwala
Use the request form for:
- a laptop or phone so a student can keep studying or a young person can take up online work;
- ration when a factory shift ends or kiln work stops;
- debt that has become unmanageable, including loans taken to pay an overseas agent;
- medical costs, school fees or rent.
Add a live photo of yourself. PHWO volunteers then check your details. If they confirm a genuine need that can be covered, support is organised. Please understand that nothing is promised and there is no set timeframe.
Free legal aid in Gujranwala
Gujranwala’s district courts hear a large number of family and property matters, and appeals from here go to the Lahore High Court in Lahore. PHWO’s legal aid service is for people who cannot afford a lawyer. Volunteer advocates look at each request, and custody disputes and hearings that are close get attention first. No FIR is required to apply. A volunteer lawyer can only be arranged when one is free, so treat this as an extra route, not your only one.
Families harmed by visa or travel agents may also report fraud to the FIA; keep receipts and chat records safe.

Students, freelancers and the device gap
Gujranwala has a large young population studying at the University of the Punjab’s Gujranwala campus, the University of Engineering and Technology’s campus in the city, and dozens of private colleges. Many also try freelancing in graphic design, data entry or online selling to support parents who work in workshops. A shared family phone with a cracked screen is not enough for an online exam or a client call.
When you write to PHWO about a device, tell volunteers what you study or what online work you do, what equipment you have now, and how a laptop or phone would change your income or results. Clear, honest requests are easier to verify.
Rishta Desk for Gujranwala families
Marriage is another area where families here spend heavily. The free Rishta Desk is open to Muslims, Christians and people of any other faith. Profiles are checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff, and every decision stays with the families themselves. There is no guarantee of a match. It is free for families in Pakistan and abroad, so families with sons or daughters overseas can use it too.
Volunteering and giving from Gujranwala
Gujranwala’s traders and its diaspora in Spain, Italy, Greece and the UK have a strong habit of giving, especially in Ramadan. You can donate money or goods from here or abroad; Zakat and Sadaqah are passed on in full. The zakat calculator is useful for shopkeepers with stock.
Local advocates and fundraisers are always welcome as volunteers. PHWO recognises them with a certificate and formal letters confirming their service.
