Khanewal grew up around one of Pakistan’s important railway junctions, where the lines to Lahore, Karachi and Faisalabad meet. Around it spread canal-irrigated fields of wheat, cotton and mango orchards, reaching to Mian Channu, Kabirwala and Jahanian. It is a hard-working district, but many families live one bad season away from debt, and they turn to the internet to find an NGO in Khanewal when that season comes.
PHWO, standing for Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization, is powered by volunteers, open to families from any district, and free for everyone. PHWO has no office, camp or local staff anywhere in Khanewal district. Its only office is in Larkana, Sindh. People here contact PHWO through the website, Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or email to info@phwo.org .
Khanewal district in numbers
The 2023 Census recorded 3,364,077 people in Khanewal District, about 21% in towns. It has four tehsils: Khanewal (about 987,000 people), Mian Channu (about 873,000), Kabirwala and Jahanian. Punjabi is the mother tongue of roughly 70% of residents, Saraiki of about 19% and Urdu of about 8%, reflecting the district’s position where central and southern Punjab meet.
Farming is the base of the economy. Mian Channu and Jahanian are market towns, and Kabirwala’s villages lie close to the Ravi and the Chenab.
Floodwater reaches Khanewal in 2025
When the combined flood of the Chenab and Ravi moved south in late August 2025, Dawn reported 51 villages submerged in Khanewal district and listed Khanewal among the towns from which people were being evacuated (Dawn). Kabirwala’s riverside villages were among those at risk.
If flood damage is part of your hardship, write about it in your request and add photos. Official compensation lists are prepared by the Khanewal DC office and PDMA Punjab, so report your losses there as well.
Daily-wage life along the railway
A good share of Khanewal’s workers earn by the day: porters and labourers near the railway, workers in flour mills and cotton factories, drivers and rickshaw owners. There is no pay on a day off sick, and no pension at the end. When the main earner of such a family falls ill or is injured, children may be taken out of school to work.
If this is your family’s situation, say so plainly. Explain who earns, how much, and what has changed.
Financial help in Khanewal
Railway porters, mill hands and orchard labourers from Khanewal use Request help to explain what has broken down at home, from an empty flour tin or a fracture that needs plating to unpaid fees, rent arrears, a debt, a missing laptop or a flooded field. Along with the form, add a live photo of yourself.
A volunteer checks the details, then weighs them. Support follows where the need checks out and PHWO can meet it. There is never a promise about the result or the time it takes, and no fee is asked at any stage.
Free legal aid in Khanewal
Khanewal city hosts the sessions court, and Mian Channu, Kabirwala and Jahanian each have civil and family judges. Cases on appeal travel to the Lahore High Court’s bench in Multan. Family quarrels, inheritance, tenancy and small plots of land account for most of the legal trouble people bring.
Set out your matter through free legal aid, with no FIR needed. Anything involving children’s custody, or a Mian Channu or Kabirwala date this week, goes to the top. Representation depends on a volunteer advocate having time, so it is not certain.
Public help in Khanewal district
For state help, the main hospital is District Headquarters Hospital Khanewal, with THQ hospitals at Mian Channu, Kabirwala and Jahanian. Rescue 1122 covers road and railway accidents, fires and river rescues. The police are on 15, and 1043 connects women to a helpline. Kafaalat is disbursed by BISP. The government’s Zakat for the district is handled by the District Zakat Committee Khanewal. For a list of local lawyers, try the District Bar Association Khanewal.
Ways to support Khanewal
Khanewalis in Multan, Lahore, the Gulf or further afield can help families at home through Donate, giving money or goods. All Zakat and Sadaqah sent there goes to people who qualify. The Zakat calculator gives you your figure, and Sponsor a case lets you adopt a single household from around the junction whose story has been confirmed.
The volunteers PHWO most lacks are lawyers practising in Pakistan and fundraisers in any country. Advocates from any of the four tehsil court towns are welcome to enrol on the volunteer page, and their service is recognised with a certificate, a letter of appreciation and an experience letter.
Keeping children in school
In families where every rupee counts, school is often the first thing to go. A boy is sent to a workshop or a tea stall, and a girl stays home to look after younger children. Fee support, uniforms and books are needs you can ask about, and a college student can request a laptop for coursework or to learn online skills. Please include the fee voucher or admission letter, the name of the school or college in Khanewal, Mian Channu, Kabirwala or Jahanian, and a line about what the student hopes to do. PHWO’s programmes page explains its education and digital skills work alongside six other areas. Requests are verified and assessed, and support is never guaranteed.
Rishta Desk
The Rishta Desk is open, free of charge, to Khanewal families of every religion. Profiles are checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff. The decision stays with the families, and a match is never assured.
