Panjgur lies in the Rakhshan valley of Makran, in south-western Balochistan near the Iranian border. Its date palms are famous across Pakistan, and in the harvest season the orchards around Chitkan and the valley villages are busy with picking, drying and packing. Beyond the oases, the land is dry and mountainous. Households live from dates, small-scale farming, livestock, trade with Iran, government jobs and wages sent home from the Gulf. A family searching for an NGO in Panjgur might be facing a poor harvest, lost cross-border work, medical bills or debt.
People of Panjgur may put their requests to Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO), a welfare organisation working across Pakistan from a single office in Larkana, Sindh. There is no PHWO office, agent or relief point in Panjgur or anywhere in Makran. Everything happens online or through volunteers, at no charge. Each request is checked by a volunteer; help is arranged only for needs that are confirmed and can be met, and nobody is promised a particular result.
What the census says about Panjgur
The 2023 Census counted 509,781 people in Panjgur District on 16,891 square kilometres (PBS census results for Balochistan’s districts). The same table records annual growth of about 8.4 percent since 2017, and an average household size of just 4.3, unusually small for Balochistan. Around 31 percent were urban. Balochi is the mother tongue of over 99 percent of residents (PBS language table).
Panjgur sub-division, which contains the town and main oases, had 392,277 people. At the other extreme, Gichk sub-tehsil in the mountains had just 33,578 people on 8,387 square kilometres, about four people per square kilometre. Families in such places can be a long day’s travel from a hospital or a court.
Dates: a valuable crop with real risks
Panjgur’s dates are its pride and a major source of income, but date farming is risky. The palms need steady water from karez and tubewells, and drought can cut yields sharply. Heavy rain at harvest time can spoil fruit drying in the open. Prices depend on traders who buy the crop, sometimes in advance, and small growers may end up in debt when the harvest disappoints.
Labourers who climb palms and pack dates earn only in season. If your family depends on this work and has fallen behind, apply through Request help. Explain what you grow or do, what went wrong, and what you owe.
Women in many Panjgur households prepare and pack dates, embroider Balochi dresses or tend animals, often for very little cash. A widow or a woman supporting children on her own can apply in her own name, with her own phone number, and may also ask about the women’s empowerment and vocational training areas that PHWO lists.
Border trade and uncertain income
Many families in Panjgur have long relied on trade across the nearby Iranian border, carrying fuel, food and goods. This work has no security: rules change, crossings close, and a driver’s income can vanish overnight. Others depend on remittances from relatives in Oman, the UAE and elsewhere in the Gulf, which also stop when a job is lost.
Monthly ration, debts, medical bills, school fees and rent can all be requested. So can a laptop or smartphone that would help a student study or a young person earn online, among the most frequent requests PHWO receives. Online skills training through Programmes may suit young people who want an income without leaving the valley.
Applying from Panjgur
- Use the online form or message PHWO from your free PHWO account.
- Explain your household’s situation in Balochi or Urdu.
- Add a live photo of yourself and any supporting papers you have.
- Keep your phone on; volunteers sometimes call to clarify details.
Payment is never part of the process. Please refuse anyone who claims to arrange PHWO help for money, whether in the bazaar, at a date market or over the phone, and let PHWO know about it.
Legal advice for Panjgur
The district’s sessions and family courts sit in Panjgur town; appeals go higher within the provincial judiciary. Arguments over date orchards, water shares and inheritance are common, and family courts deal with dower, maintenance, khula and custody.
Upload your papers with a few lines of explanation to Free legal aid, and a volunteer lawyer will reply with advice. Nobody needs an FIR to ask. Children’s cases and those with early hearings are handled first. Representation in court is not something PHWO can promise.
