Timergara is the headquarters of Lower Dir, a busy market town on the Panjkora River where roads from Chakdara, Bajaur and Upper Dir meet. Its bazaar serves hundreds of villages in the surrounding hills, and its hospital draws patients from well beyond the district. Almost every family here has a son, a brother or a husband working in Karachi, the Gulf or Malaysia. When someone searches for an NGO in Timergara, the reason is often that this lifeline has broken: the worker lost his job, fell ill, or never managed to repay the loan that sent him away.
Timergara and all the tehsils of Lower Dir fall within the area Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization (PHWO) serves remotely. In Dir there is no PHWO office and no one on its payroll; everything is handled from Larkana, Sindh. People contact it over the internet, through Message PHWO in a free PHWO account, or through a volunteer. No fee is charged for anything. Volunteers verify what you tell them, and only a need that is confirmed and possible to meet leads to support. No result is guaranteed.
Lower Dir's large families and rural life
According to the PBS census figures for KP districts, 1,650,183 people lived in Lower Dir in 2023, on just 1,583 square kilometres. Only about 3 percent were counted as urban, one of the lowest shares in the province, and the average household had 8.1 members. Pashto is spoken in over 99 percent of homes (PBS Table 11).
Big households on small farms, with few factory or office jobs nearby, explain why migration for work is so common across the district.
When the money from abroad stops
Families in Lower Dir often borrow heavily to send a young man abroad. If his visa is cancelled, his employer fails to pay, or he is injured on a building site, the household is left with the debt and no income. Some families also face the cost of bringing a body home after a death abroad.
You can describe exactly what happened in Request help. List the debt clearly: who lent it, how much remains and why it was taken. Attach whatever proof exists. Across the country, loans, groceries and a study device are what people ask for first. Doctors’ bills, college dues and house rent are looked at as well.
Many patients from Dir’s villages travel to the Timergara hospital or on to Peshawar for treatment, and the costs of transport, medicines and staying near the hospital can pile up quickly. If treatment has pushed your family into debt, attach the prescriptions and bills so volunteers can understand the full picture.
Women, widows and households without men at home
With so many men working away, women in Lower Dir often run households alone, managing children, elderly parents and farm animals. Widows and women whose husbands have stopped sending money face special difficulty, because they may not be used to dealing with offices or courts.
A woman can apply for herself, or a trusted relative can help her. If you have a problem with maintenance or a marriage that has broken down, you can ask for advice through Free legal aid without leaving home. PHWO’s Programmes also include women’s empowerment, vocational training and digital skills, which you may ask about.
Getting legal advice in Timergara
Timergara is where Lower Dir’s sessions judges and family courts sit; higher appeals leave the district for the high court. Common legal issues include land and inheritance disputes, dower, maintenance, custody and guardianship.
Send your papers and a short explanation through Free legal aid. Volunteer advocates will study them and explain what you can do. No police report is required beforehand. Anything touching children, or a fast-approaching date, jumps the queue. PHWO cannot promise a volunteer will represent you in court. Timergara’s bar association and Lower Dir’s legal empowerment committee are two other doors to try.
