Drive out of Sargodha in December and the roads are lined with kinnow orchards, packing sheds and trucks heading for the ports. Citrus is the district’s pride and a large part of its income. But when kinnow prices crash or exports stall, the pain spreads quickly from growers to pickers, graders, loaders and the shops that serve them. That is often when someone types NGO in Sargodha into a phone.
PHWO, the Peace and Humanity Welfare Organization, is a free, non-political welfare organisation that works with people remotely. Please know from the start that it has no office, depot or employee in Sargodha, Khushab or anywhere in this division. Its registered address is in Larkana, Sindh, and requests from the Sargodha region arrive online, through the website and Message PHWO.
When kinnow prices fall
In December 2025, Profit reported that Pakistan’s kinnow exports were running far below potential because of high freight costs and disruption at the Afghan border, that cold stores in Sargodha were 80 to 90 per cent full, and that growers feared losses of Rs8 to Rs10 billion (Profit). An old, disease-prone kinnow variety has also cut yields over the years.
Behind every tonne of unsold fruit are people. For the seasonal workforce, a bad year means fewer days of work, and women who grade and wax fruit in packing houses are often the first to be sent home. Pickers and graders are usually paid per crate or per day, with no contract, and many take advance loans from contractors that must be worked off the following season.
The district in figures
Sargodha District had 4,334,448 residents at the 2023 Census; 37.1% of them were urban. The six tehsils are Sargodha, Bhalwal, Kot Momin, Sahiwal (not to be confused with Sahiwal District), Shahpur and Sillanwali. Punjabi, in its Shahpuri form, is spoken across the district. Many households also have a member in the armed forces, since Sargodha hosts a major air force base.
The Jhelum runs along the district’s northern edge, and in August 2025 dozens of villages in Sargodha were reported affected when Punjab’s rivers flooded.
Requests PHWO receives from this region
Requests from Sargodha and nearby Khushab tend to fall into a few groups:
- Ration when orchard or harvest work finishes early.
- Debt, especially contractor advances and loans taken for fertiliser, medicine or a daughter’s wedding.
- A laptop or smartphone for a student at the University of Sargodha or a local college, or for a young person trying to earn online.
- School fees, rent and hospital bills.
Fill in the help request with a live photo of yourself. A volunteer reviews the details. Support is organised only in cases where the need is verified and can realistically be met. Please do not borrow against a request you have made; no result or date can be promised.
Legal aid in Sargodha: family matters first
Sargodha’s district and family courts handle a steady number of maintenance suits, khula petitions and custody cases, and appeals go on to the Lahore High Court. PHWO’s free legal aid gives people who cannot pay a route to volunteer advocates. You can write in before any FIR is filed. Cases involving custody of children, or with a hearing in the next few days, are looked at before others. Please remember that legal help depends on volunteer lawyers being available; PHWO does not guarantee representation.

Volunteer in Sargodha
Lawyers from the Sargodha bar are the volunteers PHWO needs most here, because rural women seeking maintenance often have nobody to explain the process. Retired servicemen, teachers and students can help too, by fundraising or by helping neighbours complete requests. Registration is on the volunteer page, and much of the work can be done from home in the evening. Your service is recognised with a certificate and two letters, one of appreciation and one of experience.
Giving from Sargodha's orchards and families abroad
Growers, exporters, traders and Sargodhians working in the Gulf can donate to PHWO. Cash and goods are both accepted, from Pakistan or overseas. Zakat and Sadaqah are handed on to people in need in their entirety. Farmers often ask how Ushr and Zakat on produce work; the zakat calculator is a helpful starting point, and a local scholar can confirm the details. If you would rather support one named, verified family, use Sponsor a case.
The free Rishta Desk is also open to Sargodha families of all faiths. Profiles are checked with a live selfie and reviewed by PHWO staff; families make their own choices, and no match is promised.

Frequently asked questions
I pick kinnow each winter and took an advance from the contractor. Can PHWO help with that debt?
You can describe the debt through the help request form. It is verified and assessed like every other request, and PHWO cannot promise to pay it.
We live in Khushab district, not Sargodha. Can we still apply?
Yes. PHWO serves families across Pakistan, so Khushab, Mianwali and Bhakkar residents apply the same way.
Where is PHWO's office in Sargodha?
There is none. The organisation's single office is in Larkana, Sindh. Contact it through phwo.org, by email at info@phwo.org , or by messaging PHWO from a free PHWO account.
Can a University of Sargodha student request a laptop?
Yes. State your department and year, explain why you need the device, and add the live photo that every request needs.
Our village near the Jhelum was flooded. What should we do first?
In an emergency, call Rescue 1122 and follow the district administration's instructions. Once you are safe, you can list your losses through PHWO's request form with pictures of the damage. Each case is checked before any support is decided.
